SPRING CLEANING THIEVES STYLE

3/13/2020

Picture
With the COVID19 social restrictions & distancing in full swing, we have all the kids at home for the next 3 weeks (+).  I figure there is no better time to get started on Spring Cleaning!  We transitioned our home to Thieves products about a year ago and have never looked back since.  This allows me to feel confident that not only am I keeping our home safe from chemicals, but I'm also killing yucky stuff!!!

Many people have asked "Can I use Thieves on..." and the answer  is YES!

Sensory Play Dough

1/21/2019

Picture
Sensory Dough made with essential oils can help calm a toddler, de-stress a teen, and won't harm a baby when he eats it. How many toys in your house are that versatile.
The dough itself is a great easy activity to make with your kiddos.  Mine love to customize it with their choice of colors and essential oil scents.  I mean can your play dough calm, boost mood, and even help improve immunity?

Here is the recipe we like best:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tbsp cream of tarter
  • 1.5 cups boiling water
  • 2 tbsp Fractionated Coconut oil - FCO ( can use vegetable oil)
  • 6 drops of essential oils (orange, peace & calming, & thieves are our favorites)
  • organic food coloring ( i like the powder kind or the gel)

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tarter, water, and FCO together in a large bowl.  Adjust the water or flour to ensure the right consistency.

Divide the dough into smaller sections and add 6 drops of essential oil to each one (we like to coordinate the color and scent like orange essential oil and orange dough).  Then add a little bit of food coloring to each section and knead it in until it is thoroughly combined.  It takes a little while to knead.

Store the play dough in air tight containers and enjoy.

Handmade Holidays the Oily Way

11/14/2018

Picture
Every year I do my best to pick personal gifts out for my friends and family.  I have always believed that a gift should make a person feel known and loved, because that to me is the best kind of gift.  Handmade gifts can be just that, a personal gift that conveys the love through the time & energy to create it.

However, lets have an honest moment, I have 4 kids and I don't have endless hours to sit and craft to my hearts delight.  I have an hour (MAYBE) or but most of the time only 5-10 minutes here and there.  Last year, I discovered how easy it was to make awesome cute gifts using my oils and some pretty labels, tags, and ribbon.  It was super easy and awesome and so I'm taking it a step further this year and hosting fun events for my friends.  Crafting is more fun with friends! Plus I can eat, drink, and get all my gifts done in one night.

Since not all of you can fit in my cozy little cottage, I'm going to share all my tips, tricks, recipes, and ideas.  Enjoy and be inspired to create some Handmade Holiday cheer!
Picture
Diffuser Ornaments or Garland
I love using handmade ornaments on my tree and adding oils that make my house smell amazing.  We are a fake tree family, so I add that Evergreen smell to it with wooden ornaments, salt doughs ornaments or these terra cotta ones.

Take it a step further and create some holiday garland with those wooden or clay ornaments and some greenery.

Anyway you do it, wrap them up and gift them with a bottle of your favorite oil and it's a season long gift.
Picture
Holiday Room Sprays
Speaking of making my house smell like the season, these room sprays are a favorite in my house.  I mix and match different oily mixes and put them in every room.

Get all my favorite room spray recipes AND my free printable labels.

Add a ribbon and gift these bottle of amazing Holiday Spirit!
Picture
Bath Salts & Bath Soaks
Self care is something that my group of friends needs to be reminded of constantly.  We all run and go and give of our time, energy, and emotions consistently. So a little something to relax, support our emotions and unwind from the stress is NECESSARY!  This easy Bath Soak is AMAZING!  Make it even easier by ditching the oats and just going with the Epsom Salt and Baking Soda.  The ingredients in this are awesome for detoxing the body and the possibilities for oils to use are endless.
Try:  StressAway for extra tense people, Panaway and Peppermint for active bodies, Eucalyptus for those sniffly days, or just Lavender.

Any way you make it, put it in a pretty jar, add a label or tag, some ribbon or twine, and your good to go.

Picture
Bath Bombs & Fizzies
While we are talking about self care and Bath/Spa recipes.  I need to share this recipe for bath bombs.  They take a little while to dry and set, but they are super easy to make and even nicer to enjoy!

Try:  Try Eucalyptus & Raven, or just Lavender for these too.

I like to put these in a pretty canister, add a label or tag, some ribbon or twine, a sprig of floral or evergreen and these look as good as they fell to use.
Picture
Bubble Bath & Shower Gel
One more self care and Bath/Spa recipe.  I make my own bubble bath and shower gel!  If you read the ingredients in most of the store bought stuff you'd find the word FRAGRANCE but that word is a dirty toxic word in our house.  Why? Because most of the time it's a word that represents hundred of chemical and synthetic compounds that have no regulations.  Yup, they don't have to disclose, and even if they did the FDA isn't really checking into those chemicals and their longterm effects. I'm not a guinea pig and I don't want anyone else to be either so I make my stuff with 100% pure therapeutic grade Young Living oils with the Seed to Seal quality guarantee.

Anyways,  bath gels are super easy.  Just castile soap, vegetable glycerin, and oils.  For extra bubbles add a tsp of baking soda. Put it in a pretty bottle with a tag and ribbon and you've got a gift that is ready to give.

My favorites other than joy are Eucalyptus & Peppermint, Grapefruit, StressAway, or Lavender.
Picture
Make-up Removing Pads
These are an everyday staple in my home.  I use them for nightly cleansing, my girls use them as well (start them early), my husband uses them after a long day of tradesman work too.

So grab a jar and make these awesome little cleansing pads.  I add Melrose for problem skin, Frankincense for aging skin, a little grapeseed or rosehip oil for dry skin. For oily skin I hold the coconut oil all together.

They are easy and quick to make and are a great gift with a Savvy Minerals Lipgloss, Lip Scrub, or moisturizer (I use Goats Milk from Goatslotion.com & Oils for that and its AMAZING!!!)
Picture
Soap Bars
Cute soaps that smell INCREDIBLE are a great gift.  Plus with remade soap base in a variety of options (I like organic goats milk, coconut milk and glycerin bases), they are so easy to make.

Just melt, pour into molds, and add oils and any other add ins to the mix. Coffee beans go great with Cedarwood, dried Lavender, Himalayan sea salt, sprigs of dried herbs, etc... Or just make them plain for a easy gift option.

Wrap them in bags with a tags and twine and they are a pretty gift with purpose.

Holiday Leftover Remix

11/2/2018

Picture

What do you do with your day after brunch and leftovers? After cooking all day, I have no intentions to make a huge beautiful brunch.  Don't get me wrong I want a beautiful brunch, but I want it easy and not a lot of work.   So you bet I'm not going to be standing there dunking, soaking, and grilling up yummy pieces of bread for french toast.  But I can manage to throw some cubes of bread together with ham (or turkey - I tend to save the turkey for my omelet or frittata) and bake up a French Toast Casserole.
French Toast Casserole
You'll Need:
  • 2 cups ham, cubbed small
  • Sour dough or texas toast, 1” cubed
  • 6 eggs slightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half & half
  • 1 Tbsp flour ( I like Young Living's Einkorn Flour)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1-2 Tbsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Vitality oil
  • Optional: add 1/3 cup dried cranberries for a tart bite

  1. In a lightly grease casserole dish, combine bread cubes & diced meat
  2. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, cinnamon, cinnamon bark vitality, vanilla, & dash of salt.
  3. Pour egg mixture over bread, pressing bread down to soak.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
  6. Serve with powdered sugar and good maple syrup.
Picture
To continue our French inspired brunch theme. Let's talk an amazing sandwich covered in cheese and topped with an egg or not! I LOVE cheese!! I said it, I’m a cheese freak (and yes my name is Bre also a cheese).  Anyways, this amazing sandwich is great for any meal, but especially day after brunch.  It’s awesome with turkey, even better with ham and if you don’t like the egg from Madame, hold it off and make it Croque Monsieur.  I love to add spinach, mushrooms, tomato, or even avocado when I make it without the egg.  Any way you slice it this brunch fav is one of my faves!
Croque Madame
You'll Need:
  • 4-6 slices of ham or turkey
  • croisannts or crusty bread
  • 5 tbsp Unsalted Butter
  • 2 tsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup baby swiss cheese, grated
  • 1 Tbsp flour ( I like Young Living's Einkorn Flour)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Eggs - sunny side up, basted, over easy or fried ( I like mine over easy)
  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality oil

  1. In a sauce pan, add 2 tbsp butter and flour, cook until well combined.
  2. Add milk and warm until it begins to thicken whisking constantly.
  3. Add cheese, 1 more tbsp butter, and and stir until melted.
  4. Remove from heat and add a drop of Nutmeg Vitality oil.
  5. Build sandwich with 2 slices ham or turkey, & a slice of baby swiss cheese.
  6. Butter bread all the way to the edges on both sides and place sandwich on a hot skillet, 2 minutes on each side.
  7. Top with sauce and place under the broiler or in a 400 degree oven until melted and brown.
  8. Add an egg and enjoy!
Picture
Moving onto lunch or dinner, this is a must have in my house. You can thank my mom, Patti, for this yummy remix recipe.  Though I have added my own tweaks through the years it all started with her.  Turkey makes a great add to anything that you would normally put chicken in, especially pasta.  We love pasta, like for real who doesn't?  But in all seriousness, I love making this Turkey Tetrazzini and my Turkey Alfredo Bake with penne noodle, alfredo sauce, capers, and diced shallots topped with 6 cheese italian blend. Any way you do it, it’s a delicious way to remix both turkey and rolls, add a side of leftover veggies and you’ve got a great remix meal.
Turkey Tetrazzini
You'll Need:
  • 2 cups shredded turkey
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 box angel hair pasta or Egg Noodles
  • 2 cups grated parmasan cheese
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (or made from scratch)
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup (or made from scratch)
  • 1 toothpick swirl black pepper vitality
  • 2 cups milk

  1. In a large stock pot boil water and cook angel hair or egg noodle aldente.
  2. Drain and return to pot.
  3. In a large bowl add soups, milk, celery, mushrooms, garlic salt & Black Pepper Vitality oil
  4. Pour mixture over noodles and stir to coat thoroughly
  5. In a buttered casserole dish, add half the pasta mixture
  6. Then add a layer the shredded turkey on top
  7. Next add the rest of the pasta mixture
  8. Top with the parmesan cheese and Bake for 20-30 minutes at 350 until cheese is melted and slightly brown.

Serve with leftover green beans, cranberry sauce, and rolls.  Then have some Sweet Potato Casserole leftovers for dessert!

Back in the day when I lived with my roomie Jennie, in Lincoln Park (downtown Chicago), I loved to get creative in the kitchen and feed us and our friends.  Not all the recipes turned out awesome, but my stuffed peppers were the bomb.  This twist on those peppers is just as good, and super easy.  Just combine in a bowl, fill, bake, and eat.
Turkey Stuffed Peppers
You'll Need:
  • 2 Cups shredded Turkey
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes (I like using canned fire roasted)
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 6 bell peppers, topped & seeded
  • 2 cups italian cheese blend
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup diced onions (shallots) & pepper tops
  • 1 toothpick swirl Oregano Vitality
  • 1 drop Basil Vitality

  1. In a large bowl, mix cooked rice, turkey, onions, and pepper tops until combined.
  2. Next add in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic powder, and Vitality oils and combine thoroughly.
  3. Place the peppers highly together in a baking dish
  4. Spoon the mixture into the peppers, fill tightly to the top (the whole thing cooks down a bit)
  5. Top with the cheese.
  6. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes
Serve with a side of veggies and some leftover Harvest Punch!

I am about to share a highly coveted recipe here folks.  I created this dessert about 12 years ago.  I’ve never liked apple pie, I know I’m a freak to some of you, but the texture never did it for me.  So when I was asked to bring an apple pie to my new hubby’s family holiday I cringed.  Yes I could have bought something, but that's not my style, so I made this.  It was gone, before everyone even got a piece and it's a must make every year since.  This recipe is made even more tasty by adding in oils.  But if you don’t have the oils, sub in 2 Tbsp. pumpkin or apple pie spice.  Serve this baby with caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream and I promise you too will be making it every year or all year long.
Apple Crumble Tort
You'll Need:
  • 5 granny smith apples, peeled & sliced thin
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp arrow root powder or cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp apple sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Apple Cider
  • 1 drop cinnamon bark vitality
  • 1 drop ginger & 1 drop nutmeg vitality
  • 3/4 cups flour (Young Living Einkorn is best)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Pie dough (from scratch is best)

  1. Freeze pie in tort shell or dish for 1 hr.
  2. Blind bake (pre-bake) with parchment paper to cover & pie weights (or dried beans) for 10 min. at 350
  3. Remove parchment paper and weights, and bake for another 10 min.
  4. In a large skillet, melt 2 Tbsp butter, add apples, 1/4 cup of sugar.
  5. In a small bowl mix apple cider & arrowroot powder, then add to skillet.
  6. Bring to a boil.
  7. Remove from heat & add oils and apple sauce.
  8. Chill for 30 minutes then fill crust.
  9. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, brown sugar, butter, & salt until crumble forms.
  10. Top pie and bake at 350 for 50 minutes.

Serve with caramel sauce (homemade is best) and Vanilla Bean ice cream, and I promise you'll never look back and you won't want to share!

Picture

Are you a Ham, Turkey, or both kind of family?  We do Turkey for Thanksgiving and Ham for Christmas.  So I need good recipes filled with flavors for both. Whether you roast, smoke, or fry, brining makes for a juicy bird!  Yes, you can inject, but there is something about that turkey sitting in a bath of flavor overnight while all those flavors that permeate that meat.  So if you have never brined, seriously consider it.  We brine ours over night and then I make frozen herb butter that goes under the skin and all over the outside of our bird with all that salt and pepper!  We fill the cavity with onions, heads of garlic, celery, lemon halves, and fresh poultry seasoning and we roast that baby.
Savory Turkey Brine
You'll Need:
  • 5 cups Sea Salt
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 4 drops sage, thyme, & rosemary vitality
  • 1 drops black pepper vitality
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  1. Boil 4 quarts of water, add the salt & sugar remove from heat and cool.
  2. Quarter onion & slice garlic head in half on the bias.
  3. Add the drops of vitality oils to the slices.
  4. Pour brine over turkey and add water until covered.

Holiday Side Dishes

11/2/2018

Picture
I'm a firm believer that the oh so yummy sides are almost as important as the main  dish in my house.  We have a few traditions that came from my grandma and great-grandma that I still carry on today.  One of those is the apple stuffing.  And actually it isn’t really stuffed in the turkey so I guess it’s more of a dressing, but we call it stuffing so stuffing it is! Over the years there have been a few extra add ins like sausage for my mom’s hubby and dried cranberries for a touch of tangy flavor.  But no matter how you slice it up, those apples and bread make the holidays.

So this one is hit or miss with some people, but never the way I make it!  When we host we make them 2 ways.  So whether you make it plain and just toss in the butter, mushrooms, almonds  and hopefully a drop of  Lemon Vitality, or you go all in on the casserole, green beans are a staple for the holidays.

Green Bean Casserole
You'll need:
  • 2 lbs green beans with ends trimmed
  • 3 cups baby bella mushrooms sliced
  • 3/4 cup shallots diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 5 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2-3 Tbsp Flour (I like Young Living's Einkorn - more about why in a later post)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality
  • 1-2 Toothpick Swirls Black Pepper Vitality
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • Fried Onions

  1. Wash & trim green beans.
  2. In a skillet, melt butter, add garlic, onions and mushrooms and saute until onions are translucent.
  3. Blend in 2-3 Tbsp of flour, add chicken stock & heat until slightly thickened.
  4. Add cream & cook until thick.
  5. Remove from heat and add essential oils to the mixture.
  6. Blanch green beans, and add to skillet.  Blanching is simply cooking the green beans for only a few minutes until they are bright green, then placing them in ice water to stall their cooking & hold the color and crispness.
  7. Toss the green beans in the mixture.
  8. Place the combined mixture in a large casserole dish, top with fried onions if desired and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Holiday Refreshments

11/2/2018

Picture
I don’t know about you, but when I host for the holidays people come over throughout the day up until the meal.  They munch on all my Starters & Snacks, while they smell all that food cooking.  And they need/want fun drinks and refreshments.  Here are a few of my favorites, both adult & kid friendly.   Let's start with the family friendly option.
Harvest Punch
You'll Need:
  • 4 cups Apple Cider
  • 2 cups Pineapple Juice or Cranberry Juice (depending on what you like)

  • Garnish: Orange & Apple Slices & Cinnamon Stick
  1. In a pitcher or large bowl, pour in apple cider, Pineapple or Cranberry, Orange Juice & Cranberry Ginger Ale.
  2. Slice oranges & Apples and place vitality oils on the slices.  Add slices to pitcher and stir.
  3. Serve with orange slices & cinnamon sticks
This is Harvest Punch is a fun way to add a little fizz and tang to cider. And again, make it all grown up with a little something extra, even better let people add their own by setting up a mini bar station right near the drink dispenser. Who doesn't like to have options?

Picture
Spiced Cider is a super easy classic.  Like so easy you aren’t really even working, but it looks and tastes like you did!  Plus, kick it up for adults by adding a little vodka, rum, or liquor.  Or keep it family friendly by setting up those options for your guests to choose their add in.
Spiced Apple Cider
You'll Need:
  • 3 quarts Apple Cider
  • 8 drops Orange Vitality
  • 4 drops Clove Vitality
  • 3 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality
  • 2 drops Nutmeg Vitality
  • 1 drop Lemon Vitality
  • Garnish: Orange Slice & Cinnamon Stick

  1. In a pitcher, pour in apple cider.
  2. Slice oranges and place vitality oils on the slices.
  3. Add slices to pitcher, and stir
  4. Serve with orange slices & cinnamon sticks

Change it up and make this a warm beverage by making it in a crockpot or stockpot and adding it to a Coffee Carafe to keep it nice and toasty.

Now this one is just for the adults, and wow is it an awesome add to any holiday party!  Who doesn’t love wine, I know I do!! And now wine feels like it’s got a seasonal twist, with this great Mulled Wine recipe. Does your family have an adult beverage of choice for the holidays?  If not you do now!
Mulled Wine
You'll Need:
  • 1 bottle Red Wine
  • 2 drops Clove Vitality
  • 3 drops Orange Vitality
  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality
  • 2 drops Nutmeg Vitality
  • Garnish: Orange Slice & Cranberries

  1. In a pitcher, pour in red wine.

Make this a warm beverage as well by making it in a crockpot or stockpot and adding it to a Coffee Carafe to keep it nice and toasty.
Picture
Last but not least, don't forget to give your guests a palette refreshing options.  With all the rich flavors of the holidays, a citrus infused water option is a must.  I like to make up 2-3 pitchers of infused waters for my guests to try.

You'll Need:
  • Lemon, Orange, Lime, and/or Grapefruit Slices
  • 1-2 drops of any coordinating Citrus Vitality oil or Citrus Fresh Vitality

  1. Wash the citrus fruit with Thieves Fruit & Veggie wash to remove any harmful impurities.
  2. Slice up the fruit.
  3. Place the 1-2 drops Vitality oil on the sliced fruit.
  4. Serve with the oil bottles next to the pitchers to let your guests know why their H20 is so amazing!
